Montana Permanent Plates: Everything You Need to Know

Montana permanent plates require a one-time registration fee based on vehicle age — ranging from as low as $87 for vehicles 11 years and older to $217+ for newer models — and they never expire. There are no annual renewals, no registration stickers, and no recurring fees. Combined with Montana’s zero sales tax, it’s why thousands of owners nationwide register vehicles through a Montana LLC.

Montana is one of the few states that offers permanent vehicle registration — meaning you register once and never renew. No annual registration fees, no renewal notices, no trips to the DMV every year. Your plates are good for life.

Here’s everything you need to know about Montana permanent plates: how they work, what they cost, and why thousands of vehicle owners across the country choose them.

What Are Montana Permanent Plates?

Montana permanent plates are license plates issued with a one-time registration that never expires. Under MCA 23-2-804, Montana authorizes permanent registration for qualifying vehicles — a benefit unavailable in most other states. Once your vehicle is registered, there’s no annual renewal. The plates stay valid as long as the vehicle remains titled in Montana and the LLC (or owner) stays in good standing, consistent with the registration requirements in MCA 61-3-303.

This is different from every other state we’re aware of, where registration must be renewed annually or biannually — with fees due each time.

How Permanent Registration Saves Money

The savings add up quickly, especially on high-value vehicles:

In most states: Annual registration fees are based on the vehicle’s value, age, or weight. A $100,000 vehicle might cost $500 to $2,000 per year to register, depending on the state. Over 10 years, that’s $5,000 to $20,000 in registration fees alone — on top of sales tax.

In Montana: You pay the registration fee once. Under Montana Code 61-3-321, registration fees are based on the vehicle’s age, and for most passenger vehicles, the one-time fee is modest. And Montana has no sales tax, so the purchase itself is tax-free through an LLC.

The combination of no sales tax and permanent registration is what makes Montana the most popular state for out-of-state vehicle registration through an LLC.

Which Vehicles Qualify for Permanent Plates

Montana’s permanent registration covers far more than just cars. If it has a title, chances are it qualifies for permanent plates through an LLC. Here’s a breakdown by vehicle type:

Cars, Trucks, and SUVs

The most common category. Whether it’s a daily driver, a weekend sports car, or a lifted truck — all passenger vehicles qualify for Montana’s permanent registration. No annual renewal, no sticker, no expiration date. One registration fee, paid once.

RVs and Motorhomes

Class A, B, and C motorhomes are some of the biggest beneficiaries of Montana permanent plates. RVs are expensive, and states with value-based registration fees charge accordingly — sometimes $1,000 or more per year. In Montana, you register once and you’re done. See our complete RV registration guide for the full process including GVWR requirements.

Trailers

Utility trailers, enclosed cargo trailers, car haulers, flatbeds, equipment trailers, and toy haulers all qualify for permanent registration. Trailers are one of the easiest vehicles to register in Montana because there’s no odometer, no emissions, and no inspections to deal with. The registration fee is based on GVWR, and once it’s paid, the plates never expire.

If you’re towing a trailer behind a Montana-registered vehicle, it makes sense to put both on the same LLC with permanent plates.

Motorcycles

Sport bikes, cruisers, touring bikes, choppers, and vintage motorcycles — all qualify for permanent plates. Montana even offers motorcycle-sized specialty plate designs, so you can get your Glacier National Park or university plate on your bike. Permanent registration means no annual sticker and no renewal hassle, even for seasonal riders who only take the bike out a few months a year.

Side-by-Sides, UTVs, and Off-Road Vehicles

This is one of the fastest-growing categories we see. Montana can register qualifying side-by-sides and UTVs for street-legal use, issuing standard plates that make them legal on public roads. For owners in states where getting a side-by-side street-legal is difficult or impossible, Montana’s registration is a game-changer.

The registration is permanent, the plates don’t expire, and the LLC ownership structure is the same as any other vehicle.

Boats and Watercraft

Montana permanently registers boats and personal watercraft through the same LLC ownership model. Bass boats, pontoons, center consoles, sailboats, jet skis, and yachts — all qualify. The boat is titled in the LLC’s name using the Hull Identification Number (HIN), and registration is permanent. No annual renewal, no recurring fees.

For more on the titling process for boats, see our Montana title application guide.

Aircraft

Montana registers aircraft through the Aeronautics Division, and we handle the full process through an LLC. Single-engine planes, multi-engine aircraft, helicopters, and light sport aircraft — same no-sales-tax benefit, same LLC ownership structure. We prepare and submit the registration on your behalf, including coordination with FAA documentation. Call (406) 616-2776 or get started online.

What Doesn’t Qualify

Commercial vehicles used in interstate commerce, heavy trucks that require IRP (International Registration Plan) plates, and vehicles that don’t have a standard title may not be eligible for standard permanent registration. Contact us if you’re unsure — we’ll let you know what applies to your situation.

How to Get Montana Permanent Plates

For out-of-state owners, the process works through a Montana LLC:

  1. Form a Montana LLC — we file your Articles of Organization with the Secretary of State under MCA 35-1-1026 and serve as your registered agent.
  2. Transfer the title — the vehicle is titled in the LLC’s name. We prepare all the paperwork.
  3. Register and get plates — the vehicle is permanently registered. Your Montana plates are mailed directly to you. For the full step-by-step process, see our registration walkthrough.

Standard processing takes 7 to 10 business days. Rush processing is available as fast as 3 days.

What “Permanent” Actually Means

A few important details about permanent registration:

  • No renewal required — the registration does not expire. You won’t receive renewal notices.
  • LLC must stay active — your Montana LLC needs to file its annual report each year to remain in good standing. If the LLC lapses, the registration can be affected. We handle annual reports as part of our maintenance service.
  • Insurance must stay current — Montana requires liability insurance on all registered vehicles. Your insurer needs to know the vehicle is titled in a Montana LLC.
  • Plates stay with the vehicle — if you sell the vehicle, the plates go with it (unlike some states where plates stay with the owner).

Permanent Plates vs. Annual Registration: Side-by-Side

Montana (permanent):

  • Register once, no renewal
  • No sales tax
  • No emissions testing
  • No annual vehicle inspections
  • One-time registration fee

Most other states (annual):

  • Renew every 1-2 years
  • Sales tax on purchase (3% to 10%+)
  • Emissions testing in many counties
  • Annual inspections in some states
  • Recurring registration fees based on vehicle value

Adding More Vehicles

Already have a Montana LLC with permanent plates on one vehicle? Adding a second or third vehicle is simpler and less expensive — the LLC is already formed, so you only need the title transfer and registration for each additional vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Montana permanent plates really never expire?
Correct. Once registered, there is no renewal date and no recurring registration fee. The plates remain valid as long as the LLC is in good standing and insurance is maintained.

Can I get permanent plates without forming an LLC?
If you’re a Montana resident, yes — you can register directly in your name. If you live out of state, the vehicle must be owned by a Montana entity (LLC or corporation). See our guide for out-of-state owners.

What does LLC maintenance cost annually?
Our annual maintenance service covers the LLC annual report filing, registered agent service, and compliance monitoring. Contact us for current pricing.

Can I keep my permanent plates if I sell the vehicle?
In Montana, plates generally stay with the vehicle, not the owner. If you sell a vehicle and buy a new one, the new vehicle will need its own registration and plates.

Do I need to display a registration sticker?
Montana permanent plates do not have expiration stickers. The plate itself is your proof of valid, permanent registration.

What if my LLC lapses?
If your LLC fails to file its annual report and is administratively dissolved, your registration could be affected. That’s why we track all annual report deadlines and file them proactively as part of our maintenance service.

Is permanent registration legal for out-of-state residents?
Yes. The vehicle is owned by a Montana LLC — a Montana business entity. Montana law allows any LLC to register vehicles in the state. Check your home state’s rules regarding use tax obligations. Read more in our Montana vehicle registration requirements guide.
