Montana RV and Motorhome Registration: The Complete Guide
Montana RV registration saves buyers thousands in sales tax — a $250,000 Class A motorhome that would cost $18,000+ in California tax costs $0 in Montana. Registration takes 7-10 business days, requires no physical presence in Montana, and vehicles 11 years or older qualify for permanent plates with no annual renewal. Here’s the full process.
If you’re buying a motorhome, fifth wheel, or travel trailer, Montana registration can save you a serious amount of money. RVs are some of the most expensive vehicles on the road — and that means the sales tax hit in most states is enormous. Montana charges zero.
Here’s how Montana RV and motorhome registration works — the process, the savings, and what you need to know before you start.
What You’ll Save
Montana has no sales tax. For RV and motorhome buyers, that single fact can mean five-figure savings:
- $80,000 travel trailer in Texas (6.25%) — $5,000 in sales tax. In Montana: $0.
- $150,000 fifth wheel in Florida (6%) — $9,000 in tax. In Montana: $0.
- $250,000 Class A motorhome in California (7.25%) — $18,125 in tax. In Montana: $0.
- $400,000 diesel pusher in New York (8%) — $32,000 in tax. In Montana: $0.
The math is simple: the more expensive the RV, the more you save. And RVs tend to be expensive. A Class A diesel pusher can run $300,000 to $600,000. A high-end fifth wheel is $100,000 to $200,000. At those price points, Montana registration doesn’t just save money — it changes the economics of the purchase.
Beyond the tax savings, Montana offers no emissions testing, no annual vehicle inspections, and permanent registration for vehicles 11 years and older. For a motorhome you plan to keep for decades, permanent tags mean you register once and never think about renewals again.
Which RV Types Qualify
Montana registers all categories of recreational vehicles through the same process:
- Class A motorhomes — diesel pushers, gas coaches, bus conversions
- Class B motorhomes — camper vans (Sprinter, Transit, ProMaster conversions)
- Class C motorhomes — cab-over coaches
- Fifth wheels
- Travel trailers
- Toy haulers
- Truck campers (with a separate title)
- Bus conversions (skoolies)
If it has a title and a VIN, we can generally register it in Montana. The process is the same for all types — the paperwork and forms don’t change based on the category.
How It Works: Step by Step
Step 1: Form a Montana LLC
Your RV will be owned by a Montana LLC — a legal business entity filed with the Secretary of State under MCA 35-1-1026. See our step-by-step registration guide for the full process. You don’t need to live in Montana. MCA 35-8-1001 requires a registered agent with a physical Montana address (that’s us), and we handle the filing. The LLC receives a C-Number (corporate identifier) that goes on all your registration paperwork.
Step 2: Title the RV in the LLC’s Name
How this works depends on your situation:
Buying new from a dealer:
- Give the dealer your LLC name and C-Number
- The dealer titles the RV directly in the LLC’s name using the MCO (Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin)
- The RV is never titled in your personal name — cleanest approach
Already own the RV:
- Sign your current title over to the LLC
- We prepare the MV24 Bill of Sale documenting the transfer
- Your out-of-state title becomes the basis for a new Montana title in the LLC’s name
Buying from a private seller:
- The seller signs the title to your LLC (not to you personally)
- Bill of Sale between the seller and your LLC
- We handle the Montana title application from there
Step 3: We Prepare and Submit Everything
We prepare all the documents and file them with the Montana Motor Vehicle Division in accordance with MCA 61-3-303:
- MV1 application — title and registration form required under MCA 61-3-201
- Title transfer — from the previous owner/state to your Montana LLC
- Registration and fee payment
- GVWR documentation — required for all motorhomes and trailers (more on this below)
Step 4: Plates Arrive by Mail
Montana issues your title, registration, and license plates. We ship everything directly to you, wherever you are. No trip to Montana required.
GVWR: What It Is and Why It Matters
Montana requires the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) for all motorhomes and trailers. This is the maximum loaded weight the manufacturer rates the vehicle for, and it determines which fee schedule applies.
Where to find your GVWR:
- Motorhomes: manufacturer’s label inside the driver’s door jamb, or on the data plate near the entrance
- Fifth wheels and travel trailers: label on the tongue or A-frame, or inside a storage compartment near the front
- Owner’s manual: specifications section
- Manufacturer’s website: look up your model and year
We need the exact GVWR number for your registration paperwork. If you can’t locate it, call us — we deal with this regularly and can help you track it down from the VIN or manufacturer records.
GVWR also affects how your RV is classified for registration. Heavier motorhomes (over 1 ton GVWR) and heavy trailers have their own fee schedules. This doesn’t change the process — just the fee calculation.
Registration Fees for RVs
Under Montana Code Annotated (MCA) 61-3-321, registration fees are based on vehicle age and type — not purchase price. That’s the key advantage for RV owners: a $500,000 diesel pusher pays the same age-based fee as a $50,000 travel trailer of the same year.
| Vehicle Age | Approximate Annual Fee |
|---|---|
| Brand new (year 1–2) | $200–$600+ |
| 3–5 years old | $150–$500 |
| 6–10 years old | $90–$300 |
| 11+ years old (permanent eligible under MCA 23-2-804) | One-time fee — no annual renewal |
Fees vary between motorhomes (self-propelled) and trailers (towable). The ranges above are approximate — exact fees depend on the specific vehicle type and weight class. The point is: they’re modest, they decrease with age, and there’s never a sales tax component.
Permanent Registration for RVs
Under MCA 23-2-804, RVs 11 model years or older qualify for Montana’s permanent registration. This is one of the biggest reasons RV owners choose Montana — motorhomes and trailers tend to be kept for a long time, and permanent registration means:
- One-time fee — pay once, done forever
- No renewal notices — no annual deadlines, no late fees
- No expiration stickers — your plates are valid indefinitely
- No renewal fees — year after year, nothing to pay
For a motorhome you plan to keep for 15 or 20 years, permanent registration eliminates hundreds or thousands of dollars in cumulative renewal fees that other states would charge over that period — on top of the original sales tax savings.
Insurance for Montana-Registered RVs
Montana requires liability insurance on all registered vehicles, including motorhomes and trailers. For an LLC-owned RV:
- The policy should list the LLC as the named insured
- You should be listed as a driver/operator
- Coverage should include the state where the RV is primarily used, not just Montana
Most national carriers and RV specialty insurers (Good Sam, National General, USAA) can write policies for LLC-owned Montana-registered RVs. A few tips:
- Full-timers should look for a full-timer policy that covers the RV as your primary residence
- Agreed value policies are better than actual cash value for expensive coaches — the payout matches your RV’s real worth, not a depreciated estimate
- If your RV is stored seasonally, some insurers offer storage discounts during months it’s not in use
- Start the insurance conversation early — have your policy in place before plates arrive
Is Montana RV Registration Legal?
Yes. Registering an RV through a Montana LLC is a standard, legal practice used by thousands of RV owners across the country. For general vehicle requirements, see our Montana vehicle registration requirements guide. Learn more about how permanent plates work. Montana LLCs are legitimate business entities formed under Montana state law (MCA 35-8-101 et seq.). The LLC owns the vehicle and registers it in a state with no sales tax — that’s how Montana law works.
The caveat: your home state may have its own rules about vehicles primarily garaged or used in-state. Some states impose a use tax; others don’t. The RV community is particularly familiar with this — many full-timers and snowbirds use Montana registration specifically because their lifestyle involves traveling rather than being garaged in one state.
We recommend discussing your specific situation with your CPA or attorney. The Montana side of the process is straightforward. Your home state’s position depends on your circumstances — particularly whether you’re a full-timer, a seasonal traveler, or primarily based in one location.
Temporary Operating Permits
Taking delivery of an RV from a dealer or picking one up from a private sale? We can issue temporary plates for $85 so you can legally drive it while your permanent registration is being processed. Rush temp plates are available for an additional $125. Especially common with RV purchases where you need to drive the coach home or to a storage facility.
Vanity Plates for Your RV
Montana offers personalized (vanity) lettering on most of their 100+ specialty plate designs — including RVs and motorhomes. Vanity plates are $250 (one-time fee). We prepare and submit the application on your behalf.

Adding a Tow Vehicle or Trailer
Many RV owners also register their tow vehicle, toad (towed car), or additional trailers through the same LLC. Adding vehicles to an existing LLC is simpler and less expensive — the LLC already exists, so you skip the formation step. There’s no limit to how many vehicles one LLC can own.
Annual LLC Maintenance
RVs tend to be long-term vehicles — many owners keep a motorhome for 10, 15, or 20+ years. That makes annual LLC maintenance especially important:
- Annual report — required by the Secretary of State, due on your LLC’s anniversary date. As your registered agent, we handle the filing as part of our annual maintenance service.
- Registration renewal — only until the vehicle qualifies for permanent registration at 11 years. After that, no renewals ever.
- Insurance — keep your liability policy active and current.
If the annual report lapses, the state dissolves the LLC — which invalidates your registration. We track every deadline so you don’t have to.
Buying from a Dealer? What to Tell Them
If you’re purchasing a new or used RV from a dealer and want it titled directly in your Montana LLC:
- Form the LLC first — or at least start the process before you finalize the purchase
- Give the dealer your LLC name and C-Number — they’ll use this on the title paperwork
- Tell them not to process state registration — you want the MCO/title only, not registration in their state
- Coordinate with us — we’ll work with the dealer on any paperwork they need from the Montana side
Some dealers are very familiar with this process (especially those who sell a lot of high-end coaches). Others may need guidance. We’ve worked with dealers across the country and can help smooth the conversation.
How Long Does It Take?
Standard processing is 7 to 10 business days from receipt of signed documents. Plates and registration ship directly to your address.
Rush Options
RV purchases often happen on a tight timeline — dealer holds, auction deadlines, or a trip you’ve already planned. We offer expedited processing:
- Rush LLC Formation — preparation and filing within hours
- Rush Registration — approximately 3 business days
- Rush Title — approximately 3 business days
- Rush Title + Registration — approximately 3 business days
- FedEx Overnight Shipping — next business day delivery
If you’re coordinating a dealer purchase, we recommend starting the LLC formation process as early as possible so the C-Number is ready when the dealer needs it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I register a fifth wheel or travel trailer, or just motorhomes?
All types — motorhomes (Class A, B, C), fifth wheels, travel trailers, toy haulers, truck campers, bus conversions. If it has a title and VIN, we can register it.
I’m a full-time RVer with no permanent address. Does Montana work for me?
Montana is one of the most popular domicile states for full-timers, along with South Dakota and Texas. The LLC provides a Montana address for vehicle registration. Many full-timers also establish Montana as their domicile state for driver’s license and voting purposes — though that’s a separate decision from vehicle registration. Talk to a tax professional about domicile implications.
Can I register a Class B van conversion?
Yes. Sprinter vans, Transit vans, ProMaster conversions — whether factory-built or custom — can be registered in Montana. The process is the same as any other motorhome. GVWR from the manufacturer’s label is required.
What if my RV is financed?
Check with your lender first. Some allow title transfers to an LLC while the loan is active; others require the loan to be paid off. If the dealer is financing, coordinate with them and your lender on titling the RV directly in the LLC’s name at purchase.
Do I need to bring my RV to Montana?
No. The entire process is handled by mail and online. Many of our clients have never been to Montana (though we think you’d love it).
How does permanent registration work with RVs?
If your RV is 11 model years or older, it qualifies for permanent registration — one fee, valid forever. If it’s newer, you’ll pay annual registration fees that decrease each year until it qualifies. Once permanent, there’s nothing more to pay or renew.
What about Montana vs. South Dakota for RV registration?
Both states have no sales tax. The key differences: Montana offers permanent registration (South Dakota doesn’t — annual renewals forever). Montana also has no vehicle inspections. South Dakota is sometimes chosen for domicile purposes by full-timers because of its simpler residency process. For vehicle registration specifically, Montana’s permanent tags are a significant long-term advantage.
Can I add a tow vehicle to the same LLC?
Yes. Once your LLC is established, adding additional vehicles (car, truck, trailer) is straightforward. The LLC already exists — you just do the title transfer and registration for the new vehicle. For the full registration process, see: How to Register a Car in Montana Without Living There.
What about license plate options for RVs?
Montana offers over 100 specialty plate designs for all vehicle types, including RVs. Standard plates are included with registration. For the full gallery, see: Montana License Plates from Out of State.
