How to Get Montana License Plates from Out of State
You can get Montana license plates from any state by forming a Montana LLC and registering your vehicle through it. No physical presence is required. There is no sales tax on the purchase, registration fees start around $200 and decrease with vehicle age, and plates arrive by mail in 7–10 business days.
Montana license plates are some of the most recognizable on the road — and they come with real financial benefits. No sales tax on vehicle purchases, permanent registration for qualifying vehicles, and over 100 specialty plate designs. Best of all, you don’t have to live in Montana to get them.
Whether you own a sports car, a motorhome, or a daily driver, here’s exactly how to get Montana plates from anywhere in the country — and what it will save you.
How Much You Can Save
Montana has no sales tax. Period. That applies to everything, including vehicle purchases. If you live in a state that charges sales tax on vehicles, registering through a Montana LLC can mean significant savings:
- A $75,000 truck in Texas (6.25% sales tax) — you’d pay $4,688 in tax. In Montana: $0.
- A $120,000 RV in California (7.25%) — that’s $8,700 in tax. In Montana: $0.
- A $200,000 exotic car in Florida (6%) — $12,000 in sales tax. In Montana: $0.
- A $45,000 SUV in New York (8%) — $3,600. In Montana: $0.
The higher the vehicle’s value, the more you save. For motorhomes and luxury vehicles, savings routinely reach five figures. Even on a $30,000 vehicle, most owners save $1,500 to $2,400 depending on their home state’s tax rate.
How It Works: The Montana LLC Method
The most common way to get Montana plates from out of state is by forming a Montana LLC. The LLC is a legal business entity that owns the vehicle and registers it in Montana. Here’s the process:
- Form a Montana LLC — Articles of Organization are filed with the Montana Secretary of State under MCA § 35-1-1026. Your LLC is established as a Montana business entity with a registered agent (that’s us). This typically takes a few business days.
- Transfer the title into the LLC — If you already own the vehicle, you sign the title over to the LLC with a Bill of Sale. If you’re buying new, the dealer can title it directly in the LLC’s name.
- We prepare and submit everything to the MVD — Title application, registration, fee payment — we handle the paperwork with the Montana Motor Vehicle Division so you don’t have to. Under MCA § 61-3-303, all motor vehicles operated on Montana highways must be registered.
- Plates arrive at your door — Montana issues your plates and registration documents. We ship them to you wherever you are.
No trip to Montana required. No waiting in line at a government office. The entire process is handled by mail and online.

What Montana Registration Costs
Under Montana Code Annotated § 61-3-321, Montana’s registration fees are based on the age of the vehicle, not its value. That means a $500,000 exotic car and a $25,000 sedan of the same model year pay the same registration fee. Here are the approximate state fee ranges:
| Vehicle Age | Approximate Annual Registration Fee |
|---|---|
| Brand new (year 1–2) | $200–$600+ |
| 3–5 years old | $150–$500 |
| 6–10 years old | $90–$300 |
| 11+ years old (permanent eligible) | One-time fee — no annual renewal |
Fees vary by vehicle type (cars, trucks, RVs, and trailers each have their own schedules). The Montana MVD publishes the full fee tables. The key takeaway: registration costs are modest and decrease with age — and there is never a sales tax component.

Choosing Your Plates
Montana offers over 100 specialty license plate designs — from Glacier National Park and Yellowstone to university plates, military service plates, and wildlife conservation plates. Standard plates are included with registration. Specialty plates carry a small additional fee that supports the organization or cause featured on the plate.

Want custom lettering? Vanity plates are $250 (one-time fee) and available on most specialty designs. Pick your letters, pick your plate — we handle the application.

Permanent Registration
This is one of Montana’s biggest advantages for vehicle owners. Under MCA § 23-2-804, if your vehicle is 11 model years old or older, it qualifies for permanent registration:
- One-time fee — pay once, you’re done. No annual renewals, ever.
- No expiration stickers — your registration is valid indefinitely.
- No renewal notices — no deadlines to track, no late fees to worry about.
Permanent registration is especially popular for motorhomes, classic cars, trailers, and second vehicles — anything you plan to keep long-term. If you’re registering a newer vehicle, you’ll pay annual fees that decrease each year until it reaches the 11-year mark and qualifies for permanent tags.

Is This Legal?
Absolutely. Montana LLCs are legitimate business entities formed under Montana law (Title 35, Chapter 8, Montana Code Annotated). Forming an LLC and registering a vehicle through it is a standard, widely used practice — thousands of vehicle owners across the country do this every year. This isn’t a loophole or a gray area. It’s business registration, and it’s been done this way for decades. Read our complete registration walkthrough for the full process, and learn about Montana permanent plates.
Montana has no sales tax, no inspections, and offers permanent registration — that’s why it’s one of the most popular states for vehicle registration in the country. We prepare and submit your Montana documents correctly, working directly with the Montana Motor Vehicle Division on your behalf.
Every state has its own rules about vehicles owned by out-of-state entities. Most of our clients never have an issue, but we always recommend a quick check with your CPA or attorney if you have questions about how your home state handles out-of-state registrations. The Montana side is straightforward — we handle that part every day.
How Long Does It Take?

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to live in Montana to get Montana plates?
No. The LLC is the Montana entity — it has a Montana address (our registered agent office) and registers the vehicle in Montana. You can live anywhere in the country.
Can I register any type of vehicle?
Cars, trucks, SUVs, motorhomes, RVs, travel trailers, cargo trailers, motorcycles, boats, and more. If it has a title, we can generally help. Some vehicle types have specific requirements — see our requirements guide.
What if my vehicle is financed?
It depends on your lender. Some lenders allow title transfers to an LLC; others don’t. You’ll need to check with your financing company first. If the vehicle is paid off, there are no restrictions.
Do I need Montana insurance?
Montana requires liability insurance on registered vehicles. Many national insurers (State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, etc.) can write a policy for an LLC-owned vehicle registered in Montana. We recommend contacting your insurance agent early in the process to confirm coverage.
What about emissions testing or vehicle inspections?
Montana has no emissions testing requirement and no annual vehicle inspection. That applies to all Montana-registered vehicles regardless of where they’re driven.
Can I add more vehicles to my LLC later?
Yes. Once your LLC is established, adding additional vehicles is simpler and less expensive than the initial setup — the LLC already exists, so you skip the formation step.
What happens when my LLC’s annual report is due?
Montana requires an annual report filing for LLCs (due on the anniversary of formation). As your registered agent, we receive the notices and handle this as part of our annual maintenance. If an annual report lapses, the LLC can be dissolved — which would affect your vehicle’s registration.
How is this different from the “Vermont loophole”?
The Vermont titling method (which allowed out-of-state owners to title vehicles in Vermont without an LLC) has been closed. Montana’s LLC registration is a different process — it uses a legitimate business entity, not a personal registration workaround. The Montana approach remains available and widely used.
