Montana License Plates: Every Plate You Can Get
Montana runs one of the most colorful plate programs in the country: alongside the standard issue, there are more than 200 sponsored designs anyone with a Montana-registered vehicle can put on their bumper — wildlife, universities, search and rescue, veterans’ causes, national parks. And because vehicles registered through a Montana LLC are Montana-registered vehicles, owners all over the country get to pick from the same catalog. Here’s every kind of plate you can get, what each one involves, and how they arrive.
The Montana plate menu:
- Standard issue — comes with every registration
- Permanent registration plates — register once, never renew (qualifying vehicles)
- Sponsored designs — 200+ organization plates anyone can buy
- Personalized (vanity) — your characters, on most designs
- Veteran & eligibility plates — tied to a qualifying person, so not available on LLC-owned vehicles
The Standard Montana Plate
Every Montana registration comes with the state’s standard-issue plate at no extra decision — if you never pick anything, this is what arrives. It does the job, and plenty of owners stop here. The fun starts when you don’t.
Permanent Registration Plates
Montana’s best-known plate perk isn’t a design — it’s that light vehicles 11 years and older can be registered permanently: one registration, one set of plates, no annual renewal ever again. It’s a big part of why collectors run older vehicles through Montana. The full rules are in our Montana permanent plates guide.
Sponsored Plates: 200+ Designs Anyone Can Buy
Montana lets nonprofit organizations sponsor their own plate designs, and the catalog has grown past two hundred: wildlife and conservation groups, universities and school foundations, search and rescue teams, first-responder organizations, museums, youth sports leagues. When you choose one, part of what you pay is a donation that goes to the sponsoring organization — your plate funds the cause on it.
No membership or eligibility is required for these — any Montana-registered vehicle can carry any sponsored design. A few favorites from the catalog:

Personalized (Vanity) Plates
Montana allows personalized characters on the standard plate and on most sponsored designs, so you can have your pick of design and your own combination on it. Length limits depend on the design — busier plate artwork leaves fewer characters — and the state reviews every requested combination before approving it. Our personalized tag service is $250, and we handle the request and approval process as part of it.
Veteran & Eligibility Plates
Separate from the buy-anyone sponsored catalog, Montana issues plates that require personal qualification — military service plates, disabled veteran plates, and similar. These belong to a qualifying person, documented with the application. That means they don’t apply on the LLC route: when the vehicle is owned and registered by a Montana LLC, the company is the registrant — and a company can’t be a veteran. For LLC-owned vehicles, the menu is the standard plate, the 200+ sponsored designs, and personalized combinations — which is plenty of room to fly your colors (several sponsored designs support veterans’ causes).
What Plates Cost
Plate pricing stacks in layers, all passed through at cost: the standard plate is part of ordinary registration; a sponsored design adds its organization’s fee (that’s the donation); and a personalized combination adds the state’s personalization fee on top of whichever design carries it. None of these are our fees — our service pricing is in the card below, and state and county amounts are itemized separately on your paperwork, at cost.
How Plates Arrive — and Driving Before They Do
Plates are issued with the registration. With us, registration and plates run 7–10 business days standard, with rush service as fast as 3 days — and if you need to drive right away, a temporary tag covers the gap: a big-print permit for the back window while the metal is on its way to you.
Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Plates
Plates get stolen off bumpers and mangled in car washes more often than you’d think. Replacements go through the Montana MVD, and for our clients we prepare and submit the replacement paperwork the same way we handled the original registration — one call, new plates on the way.
Don’t Live in Montana?
You don’t have to. Vehicles owned by a Montana LLC are registered in Montana — where the company lives — which is how owners nationwide end up with Montana plates on everything from daily drivers to exotics. Frequently Asked Questions
How many license plate designs does Montana have?
More than 200 sponsored designs are currently available, plus the standard issue and eligibility plates. We keep photos of the full current catalog in our Montana Tag Gallery, organized by category.
Can anyone get a Montana specialty design, or do I have to be a member?
The sponsored designs are open to anyone with a Montana-registered vehicle — no membership required; part of the plate’s cost is a donation to the sponsoring organization. Veteran and eligibility plates are different — they’re tied to a qualifying person, so they aren’t available on LLC-owned vehicles.
Can I personalize a sponsored design?
Usually, yes — Montana allows personalized combinations on the standard plate and most sponsored designs. Character limits depend on the design, and the state approves each combination. Our personalized tag service is $250 and includes handling that process.
Do I have to live in Montana to get Montana plates?
No. Vehicles owned by a Montana LLC are Montana-registered, so the full plate catalog is available to owners anywhere. See how to get Montana plates from out of state for the whole process.
How long until my plates arrive?
Registration and plates run 7–10 business days standard with us, or as fast as 3 business days with rush service. A temporary tag ($85) lets you drive while the plates are made.
